Recently, one morning actually, I was sitting on a bench in a mall, one of many benches surrounding a fountain, wasting to time to pay my “cell” bill when “T-Mobile” opened.
I had never really spent much time in the malls and was really amazed by the activity, so early in the morning. I was astonished to see a horde of people just rushing back and forth, obviously with some “urgent” purpose in mind.
Kind of reminded me of the "dozer's" from Fraggel rock, a "Jim Henson" TV puppet show my son watched when he was young. The dozer's only function was to build, as such without their routine of building they were lost.
After awhile I noticed that it wasn't a horde of people I was watching, just the same people who seemed to be wandering aimless around the mall, without any real purpose or reason.
This particular bench I was siting on, also afforded me the opportunity to be close to a book stores, which allowed me to visually scan daily “headlines’ from newspapers around the country and also the covers of various periodicals.
From this vantage point, I was also, without meaning to, overhear people talking as they passed by, or sat down on other benches nearby.
What soon became apparent to me was that most people are not cognizant of anything other than the details of their own personal lives. Not a bad thing, but one that doesn't lend itself to an awareness of life around you.
I was curious to see, that even when people were within spitting distance of a media outlet (book store), none stopped, or even glance into the store at the “news” books being displayed.
During the 45 minutes or so of just observing my surrounding and people, I didn’t overhear even one conversations about “world” events, events taking place in D.C., or for that matter events happening on a local level in San Antonino that would impact their daily lives.
Interesting and poignant, apparently in our modern society people could care less about anything but themselves. Granted self preservation is a powerful force, but as a group we seem to be detached more so from each other and the events that impact us, then we have been in previous years.
I often wondered why there is some much apathy regarding events of significance? Maybe what I was witnessing in the mall, was a small window into the bigger picture?
I especially wonder if this small window reflectedto some extent the market place. Specifically that when things are beyond out personal control as investors, we tend to ignore them as a "bliss is ignorance" approach.
I would add a caveat here for "T", in that it also seems, as average people in all walks of life, when get close to waking up and “knowing the truth” about an event, someone, somewhere will engage the philosophy of ignorance to quell our fears.
Unfortunately, the damage being done by these small and not so small changes; is insidious in that we can and do take exception with this real issue of change, but we can't seem to effect a positive change for ourselves, without compromising a right.
While I don't believe that we , as shareholders are totally responsible for our predicament, we have contributed to our potential demise.
I phrase it that way because it appears that our demise is hastened by design, rather than attributable to any accident or natural selection benefiting society as a whole over our individual needs.
One has only to review the "trend" in both business and politics to recognize that a policy of ignorance by design is increasingly being followed by those in charge.
It's almost as if the consensuses among those charged with the responsibility to maintain and promote the
“public trust,” are more adept at creating chaos and hiding the truth, as a means to ensure their jobs, avoid jail and reap the benefits of their ill gotten gains, than actively engaging in anything productive, necessary to serve the public trust.
What seems most applicable to this last observation is best served by paraphrasing an old saying,
“To better serve the people, investors, the public, let’s treat them like mushrooms, keep them in the dark and feed them BS.”
It’s a sad of affairs that a philosophy of ignorance by design is fast becoming the SOP (Stand operating procedure) by which our society appears to operate.
By that I mean, where knowledge is power, as CMKXers with our many CMKX message boards, we are very well informed. Sadly those people outside our board's influence, haven't a clue or it seems so.
Why? because its more conducive to the needs of the bad guys, to kill off the news / messenger before the truth of a matter gets out.
Consider this, why don't we see or hear about more whistle blowers? Because the "hidden agenda" / policy within any organization charged with ensuring the continuity of integrity regarding the public trust, is lost or conveniently misplaced.
Really? Yes. Where there is at always at least one person who knows what is going on, the policy seems to be to fire that person, or make them look like an idiot via a "smear campaign" to discredit their message.
I realize this is a CMKX message board, but I thought while we waited, I would draw some parallels to the outside world and our “CMKX micro environment,” with some observations from a park bench that might just afford us a bit of a diversion….lol
